Removing a structure is only one decision. The next decision is whether the site should remain as-is, receive basic smoothing, take imported fill or be prepared under a separate engineered plan.

1. Decide the next use before choosing the finish
An area intended for routine mowing needs a different result than a future driveway or building site. Tell the estimator what comes next and whether the work is temporary or final. That choice affects fill quantity, slope expectations and whether another contractor must establish elevations.

2. Separate demolition debris from suitable fill
Broken wood, drywall, metal and mixed demolition material should not be hidden beneath soil. Concrete and masonry reuse depends on the project design and applicable requirements; it should never be assumed. The debris-removal scope should identify what leaves before grading begins.
3. Measure the area and available soil
Provide approximate length, width and depth of low areas, plus photos showing the entire work zone. Identify any stockpiled soil already on the property. Imported fill adds material selection, delivery access, trucking and spreading to the scope.
Soil that looks plentiful in a pile can cover less area than expected once it is spread. A volume estimate should account for the desired depth and the fact that loose and compacted material do not occupy exactly the same space.
4. Protect drainage paths and utilities
Grading can redirect water. Show swales, ditches, culverts, neighboring structures, foundations and areas that already hold water. Also identify septic systems, wells, irrigation, buried service lines and utility markings before equipment enters.

Tracking or smoothing soil with equipment is not the same as tested structural compaction. A future building pad, pavement section or engineered fill area may require specified material, lifts, moisture control and testing.

6. Plan equipment access and surface protection
Soft ground, narrow gates, steep slopes, septic areas and overhead lines can limit the machine that reaches the work. Photograph the route from the street and identify concrete, lawns, fencing or neighboring property that must remain protected.
Weather can also change whether equipment can work without excessive rutting. The scope should allow unsafe or damaging ground conditions to be reconsidered before mobilization.
